Amphetamine Addiction

February 6, 2010

Amphetamines, both legal and illegal are potentially addictive.  An increasing number of individuals are using them for recreational purposes, even those that are legal, prescription medications, for example Adderall. Adderall is prescribed to individuals that suffer from narcolepsy and also ADHD.  There are some persons who use it to get high and not because they suffer from either of the aforementioned conditions.  An addition to a prescribed amphetamine such as Adderall can be just as physically and psychologically damaging as being addicted to illegal amphetamines such as speed or meth.  It is important for such individuals to enter a drug rehabilitation program if their dependency becomes severe enough.

Persons who take amphetamines may very well develop a tolerance to it. When this occurs it takes more of the drug to get previously experienced effects.  This can lead to an addiction.  Another danger associated with tolerance, is that because individuals are forced to take more of the drug in order for it to “work,” they run the risk of overdosing and dying.

One of the most addicting and dangerous amphetamines, is an illegal one, methamphetamine.  Methamphetamine use, abuse and addiction have become quite problematic in the U.S. In certain parts of the country dependencies on meth are worse than other illegal drugs. The drug is so powerful that it destroys entire communities. It causes users to degenerate very rapidly and sometimes they become unrecognizable to their family and friends after taking the drug after only a short while.  Individuals who take meth tend to act more violently and aggressive. Domestic violence is a real problem amongst those addicted to meth. A severe meth addiction will likely require drug rehabilitation.

Amphetamines are central nervous stimulants that are used for a number of conditions and ailments, including narcolepsy, ADHD and even for weight loss. It is also an appetite suppressant as well.  Individuals that use amphetamines run the risk of becoming addicted to them because there is the potential for dependency in both the legal and illegal forms of the drugs.  Individuals that do develop an addiction to the drug, or foresee one coming, will need to reach out and get help.  A drug rehabilitation program can be quite beneficial and will often times be necessary.
