Danya International,
Inc. has developed a prototype screening instrument for
identification of alcohol and drug abuse problems to be used by
practitioners in primary health care settings. Many medical problems
that cause individuals to seek or require medical treatment are
related to drug or alcohol abuse. When screening programs identify
medical patients who may have alcohol or drug problems, the concern
shown by healthcare providers, even during brief encounters or
interventions, can provide patients with significant motivation for
engaging in the assessment and treatment process.
The DAPA protocol is designed as a two-level
screen. The protocol suggests that all patients presenting for
primary care appointments receive the first level screen-- The
Health and Safety Screen. Based on the results of the
first level screen, the patient may be recommended to take The
Drug and Alcohol Problem Screen. After completion of the
drug screen, information is posted indicating whether someone's
health is at risk from drinking alcohol or using drugs. If a health
risk is indicated, advice and options on how to minimize this risk
will be displayed. Useful health links are displayed for the
patient to explore. Finally, for the provider, a summary
of the patient results is provided. In addition, useful links
are given for the primary care provider to explore.

Instrument is now available at http://www.danya.com/dapa
