Ecstasy Legality

February 6, 2010

Ecstasy is a Schedule 1 drug in the United States and is illegal to possess and distribute. Individuals who are found with ecstasy on their person are at risk of being jailed. This was not always the case. At one time the drug was not only legal but prescribed by physicians.

At one time, ecstasy was prescribed by doctors to treat mental disorders. Initially, doctors believed that it would help improve these conditions. Soon, health professionals would begin to recognize the negative side effects that came along with the drug’s use and also its potential for psychological addiction. It was then that they stopped prescribing it. Soon, it would become illegal to use.

Ecstasy isn’t the only drug that was once legal but later made illegal. Cocaine is one such drug. Its use was far more widespread then ecstasy. In fact, cocaine and products that contained it, could be purchased in drugstores and local stores. It was only later that people would begin to recognize the dangerous side effects and addictive potential that it stopped being added to products and eventually became illegal.

Ecstasy is a psychoactive drug used most commonly by ravers, clubbers, teens and college aged adults.  Individuals take it for numerous reasons, including to increase their energy levels, to feel closer to others and even to feel more sexual.  Ecstasy is an illegal drug, however, which makes anyone who takes it susceptible to legal trouble and jail time. It is classified as a Schedule 1 drug in the United States.  Schedule 1 drugs are considered to be amongst the most potentially abusive. They also have no acceptable medical benefits. They are not prescribed by physicians and they are not carried by pharmacists. Other drugs which fall under this classification include LSD, GHB, Heroin, Marijuana and Ecstasy. People caught with schedule 1 drugs are punished more severely, face stiffer punishment and longer jail times, something that ecstasy users and dealers will likely want to consider.
