Coffee Addiction

February 6, 2010

Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world. It has a number of great health benefits and is considered quite safe. However, what many people fail to recognize is that it is possible to develop an addiction to coffee.

Many people drink coffee to get a burst of energy. This is largely why it is so often drank in the morning. Some individuals feel like they need it wake up and properly start their day. However, once a person has developed an addiction, that one morning cup of coffee, turns into 5 or 6 cups and is consumed throughout the day. Individuals that consistently drink this many cups of coffee or more each day may begin to feel both physically and psychologically compelled to do so.

Coffee can be both psychologically and physically addicting. When a person feels compelled to drink coffee, they may believe that they will be unable to get by or function without it. Individuals that have developed a physical addiction to it may experience physical withdrawals, such as headaches when they stop drinking it. To avoid this, they will continue to drink coffee, even when they don’t need a burst.

Coffee is a drink that can be consumed hot or cold. It is known for its powerful anti-oxidant compounds and its ability to give users a surge of energy which can come in handy when a person needs a pick-me-up. While a little coffee can be very beneficial, drinking too much can lead to an addiction and various other ailments. Exhaustion due to the adrenal glands being overworked, continuous dehydration and high blood sugar levels in individuals who routinely add a lot of sugar to their coffee, are all potential risks of a coffee addiction.

The overworking of the adrenal gland is a risk that addicts face because caffeine stimulates these glands, leaving them exhausted if stimulation is ongoing. Not only is the adrenal gland overworked but the user subsequently becomes extremely tired.

Coffee can also lead to dehydration because the caffeine it contains is a diuretic which causes the body to lose water. High blood sugar levels are a risk when persons add a lot of sugar to their coffee. Many popular coffee beverages contain high levels of sugar. Overtime this can contribute to a number of ailments.
