Prescription Drug Rehab

February 6, 2010

Prescription drug abuse and addiction is a real problem in the United States. The number of individuals using prescription meds for purposes they are not designed for has increased tremendously in recent years. In fact, some people are foregoing “street” drugs and instead are using prescription drugs.  People that develop severe addictions and are unable to stop on their own may need prescription drug rehab.

Prescription drug rehab will be nearly identical to regular drug rehabilitation. In fact, many, if not most, traditional programs will offer prescription drug treatment and handle addicts in the same manner as those addicted to street drugs.

The type of prescription drugs a person uses will have an effect on how they are treated. Those persons with an addiction to narcotic or opiate-based prescription drugs may require detoxification. Detox helps individuals get through the rehab process with fewer, or less severe, withdrawals. It also ensures that this process is a safe one. Sometimes, if a person is addicted to narcotics, going cold turkey can be dangerous and even deadly. Persons in poor health are even more susceptible to risky and negative outcomes.

Prescription drugs abuse sometimes occurs after a person has been prescribed medication. Whether they don’t take it as advised or are simply more prone to addiction, a dependency occurs. There are other people who become addicts after only taking prescription meds recreationally. How a person becomes an addict is less important than them getting appropriate care and treatment.  A good rehabilitation can be extremely beneficial in helping persons get clean.

There are many different types of prescription drug rehab programs. One facility may take a different approach than another. Users will need to find one that they feel best suits them. This typically makes the process a bit easier because an addict at least feels comfortable in their surroundings. The rehabilitation process is never easy. It will be a struggle to get clean. Persons will have to give all they have in order to get clean. However, if they enroll in a quality program, they have a real chance at overcoming their addiction.
