Marijuana has been utilized for one purpose or another, for thousands of year.  People have eaten it, smoked it and even used it as fabric, rope and fuel.  At one time it was legal to possess and use it in the United States but it would eventually become a target of the ‘war against drugs’.  Between 7000 BC and 8000 BC, individuals used marijuana plants to make fabrics. 1000 years later, the seeds of those plants were consumed as food by the Chinese. They would begin using marijuana medicinally in the late 2000s BC. The Scythians begin to make use of the plants between 700 BC and 300 BC. They used them mostly for fabrics and clothing.  The Hindu would later proclaim marijuana as ‘sacred grass.’ It was often given as an offering to one of the Hindu gods and also used for medicinal purposes.

Marijuana would be introduced to and then spread throughout Northern Europe between 400 BC and 100 BC.  The Scythians introduced Europe to marijuana and Christopher Columbus would later bring marijuana to the New World, known today as America, in the 15^th century. 

In the 1600s farmers in the United States were bound by law to grow marijuana in Jamestown. It had tons of uses in America.  It also was traded heavily in other parts of the world including South and Central Asia.

Hers is an interesting fact concerning marijuana cultivation, It was the primary crop grown on George Washington’s farm.  Thomas Jefferson also grew it, though it wasn’t his main crop.  In the 1840s, pharmacies begin selling marijuana to the public in the United States.  Just 40 years later United States citizens could lawfully smoke marijuana in parlors throughout the country. Here’s another cool factoid about the history of marijuana, its role in the Ford Model T.  Many people have heard of the Model T, a vehicle created by Henry Ford, but few persons know that the car used hemp ethanol and that the plastic inside the car was made of hemp.

In 1913, it became illegal to use marijuana in California. That was followed by prohibitions in Utah, Texas, Louisiana, New York and finally throughout the country. Today, in the United States, the marijuana laws have changed some. In certain states it is legal to possess small amounts for personal use. In other parts of the country individuals can possess marijuana for medical use.  However, they do need to be prescribed it by their physician.
